No March in Quebec City this year — here's why

Today is May 30th, the date on which we were scheduled to hold our annual March for Life in Quebec City. Unfortunately, we canceled it over two weeks ago.

As we explained in previous emails, the main reason for the cancellation was that we organized the Génération Vie event in Montreal on April 25th. This event aimed to bring together groups in Quebec that work to defend faith, family, and life from conception to natural death. Strategically organized during this election year in Quebec, the event was successful, influencing the debate and continuing to do so as we publish some of the talks and speeches from that day in the coming weeks.

Add to this the National March for Life in Ottawa on May 14th, in which we played a significant role:

  • I took part in the press conference the day before the march and gave a speech during the lead-up of the March;
  • after the march, QLC organized an event for the people on the bus we had chartered from Montreal;
  • I hosted the pro-life banquet, which brought together over 500 pro-life supporters from across Canada and abroad. The march itself attracted between 3,000 and 5,000 people. You can see photos of the March here;

... Due to our limited resources, we realized that we could not hold a march in Quebec City this year.

We are on day four of our three-week summer fundraising campaign. Thank you for your support as we prepare for a possible return of the Quebec March for Life in 2027. Please give generously today.

A March for Life in Quebec City is not the same as one in Ottawa. Yesterday, on an episode of ThéoVox Actualités, a program on which I appear monthly, I was asked why there were virtually no counter-protesters in Ottawa, whereas in Quebec City, there were hundreds in 2025. There are probably many reasons for this disparity, but one significant reason is that, in Quebec, trade unions and left-wing academic circles collaborate to maintain the [abortion] status quo, using either taxpayers' money or their members' funds. Another factor is that the police presence in Quebec City was inadequate. We found that the police were almost complacent toward counter-demonstrators seeking to disrupt our gathering.

This police complacency is all the more serious given that there were ample grounds to arrest the troublemakers. Section 176(2) of the Criminal Code stipulates the following: "(2) Every one who wilfully disturbs or interrupts an assemblage of persons met for ... a moral or social ... purpose ... is guilty of an offense punishable on summary conviction." The troublemakers obviously violated this law, so why was there no police intervention to stop them?

Furthermore, a guest priest began our March 2025 event with a prayer, which apparently served as a signal for a group of counter-demonstrators to storm the pro-life protest. They waved scarves, whistled to drown out our speeches, and set off smoke bombs. This type of interference is a criminal offense under section 176(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada, which states: "Every one who (a) by threats or force [e.g., smoke bombs], unlawfully obstructs or prevents or endeavours to obstruct or prevent an officiant from celebrating a religious or spiritual service or performing any other function in connection with their calling, ..."

In short, the March for Life requires considerable resources and advance planning due to the hostility of the academic and trade union establishment and the complacency of the police in Quebec City. To ensure the march runs smoothly, we must meet regularly with provincial and municipal authorities and consult often with our lawyer friends. We must also hire a private security force, as Génération Vie did on April 25th or, at the very least, rigorously train a team of serious volunteers. Incidentally, we are still considering taking legal action against last year’s troublemakers. A lawyer who supports the movement is currently evaluating our legal options.

We would like to organize a March for Life in Quebec City next year. However, to do so, we need substantial support from the pro-life community in Quebec. You have already shown that the cause of the unborn child is important to you. If you want a march in Quebec City that rivals the one in Ottawa in quality (relatively speaking, of course), we need your help today in the form of a generous donation as a sign of your support for this project.

Pro-life advocates have the right and duty to publicly oppose the killing of unborn children through abortion. In Quebec, 20,000 abortions are performed annually.

Thank you for donating to help us demonstrate our support for life and opposition to abortion through a March for Life in our province. Please give generously!

For Life,

Georges Buscemi

P.S. We are on day four of our three-week early summer fundraising campaign. Our goal is to raise $20,000. To date, we have raised just under $1,000. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has already donated. Please donate today so we can return in force next year for the 2027 March for Life. Donate >>
