The “hate speech” bill is on the verge of being adopted

The controversial Bill C-9 is now before the House of Commons for a final vote before being sent to the Senate.

Today at 3 p.m., the House of Commons began the process (presentations of various bills, speeches, etc.) leading up to a vote on this bill, which, if adopted without amendment, will significantly broaden the definition of “hate” while increasing the associated penalties.

The Liberals, supported by the Bloc Québécois (one wonders what purpose they serve...), have Christians in their crosshairs, with Minister Marc Miller having designated certain passages in the Bible regarding homosexuality as “hateful” and their citation as grounds for prosecution.

Meanwhile, Bill 21 on secularism has been brought before the Supreme Court of Canada; its opponents claim it infringes on the rights of religious minorities, while its supporters argue that it is part of Quebecers’ choice to free themselves from Canada’s “religious yoke.”

This case goes far beyond the scope of Quebec’s secularism law; beyond Bill 21, it is the notwithstanding clause — which allows legislatures to exempt a law from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and from judicial review — that is at issue.

However, whether Canadian multiculturalism or Quebec secularism prevails, the same moral and religious indifference remains. Both stem from the same concept of state neutrality towards religion. In doing so, these two visions reject our heritage as a guide for society, with all the woes that follow: abortion, euthanasia, transgenderism, declining birth rates, etc.

Quebec Life Coalition, however, proposes a third way that is neither multiculturalism nor secularism: that of a Christian society whose culture truly connects with our roots and our history. A society that will protect life from conception to natural death. Why Christianity? Because it is true and because it is the only remedy that will truly heal Quebec society of its ills. As we see, the same causes produce the same effects; not only Quebec, but Canada and the rest of the West are suffering from this loss of meaning that has followed the rejection of Christianity. Moreover, “When a society is perishing, the wholesome advice to give to those who would restore it is to call it to the principles from which it sprang,” wrote Leo XIII in Rerum novarum.

I invite you to join us at Génération Vie on April 25; this event aims to strengthen ties among the various pro-life and pro-family groups in Quebec.

Our fundraising campaign has reached $15,115 of our $20,000 goal; we still need to raise $4,885 to reach our target. A huge thank you to all the donors who have contributed — thanks to your generosity, we have collected three-quarters of our goal. If you haven’t donated yet, or if your heart is moved to give again, we invite you to help us reach the remaining $4,885.
