To say it's been a busy fall would be an understatement:

• We've continued running our Enceinte et inquiète ("Pregnant, Need Help") hotline and website, helping on average one or two mothers (of born or unborn children) per week find housing and services (medical, legal, etc.) as they await the birth of a child (more on this in a future email);
• We've developed a candidate questionnaire tool for use by our Quebec readers, to question their local candidates ahead of the Quebec election on October 5;
• We've created an election guide for the same election;
• We've just closed out a year of social media publications using our new "meme" and photo-and-video-centred approach, which has reached about one-third of all Quebecers and yielded about 2 million views per month and 500 comments a day;
• We've continued running our Vigil 365, a perpetual vigil outside of abortion facilities in downtown Montreal, for one or two hours a day, 365 days a year;
• We've continued our weekly parish visits, which over the last year have allowed us to speak to over 40 parishes, mostly in the Montreal area, and therefore to hundreds if not thousands of people about faith, family and the defence of life, from conception to natural death;
• We've continued recruiting and planning the Life Chain event, which is to take place on October 4.

We are in the tail end of our fall 2026 fundraiser. None of the activities above would have been possible without sustained financial support from people just like you. Please prayerfully consider giving today.

But in the midst of this whirlwind of activity, one thing remains in the centre, as a calm, steady beating heart: prayer.

Without the stillness and focus of prayer, which allows us to centre our unsteady and fragile wills on God's, we would have dissolved a long time ago, and especially in the tumult of this busy fall. But here we are, thanks to the patience and grace of God.

And there is nothing that exemplifies our dependence on God's grace more than our participation in the twice-yearly 40 Days for Life vigil. This year, in Quebec, our vigil — which officially begins today — takes place in the city of Sherbrooke. (For information about exact location and times, call Brian Jenkins at 438-930-8643.)

The 40 Days for Life prayer campaign for an end to abortion began in the USA, but quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, with hundreds of cities across the US, Canada, Europe and Latin America simultaneously gathering twice a year for 40 days in a row of prayer and fasting to end abortion. Quebec Life Coalition began doing its "40 Days" in 2009, during the Lent season.

Participants gather in a park or street, normally near an abortion facility, to pray to God for an end to the scourge of abortion. This year, my colleague Brian Jenkins will be returning to Sherbrooke (again, for information about exact location and times, please call him at 438-930-8643), where his presence has not always been welcomed by officials: he was given a ticket last year, which he contested and for which he still awaits a trial date.

A further challenge awaits our 40 Days vigil this year: Quebec's latest secularism law (Bill 9), which forbids religious expression in public, save for cases when permission is obtained from the city authorities. Well, thanks to God, Brian appears to have obtained permission, and so the 40 Days will go on in Sherbrooke, in the same spirit as the hundreds of other 40 Days for Life vigils taking place around the world this fall.

The Quebec government may not want public prayer, the city authorities might be annoyed at seeing pro-lifers on the streets, and some members of the public might be irritated, but be certain that God smiles upon those who speak through prayer for the voiceless children in the womb who are threatened by abortion.
