We're kicking off the fourth week of our year-end fundraising campaign, made all the more urgent by the ongoing Canada Post strike. Your generosity is crucial to keep us going.
This past weekend, I celebrated a milestone: 50 years on this Earth and 15 years as president of Quebec Life Coalition. As I reflect on these years, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the blessings and challenges that have shaped me and our mission to defend life and uphold Christian values in Quebec.
How It All Began
I began my "career" (if you can call it that) in the pro-life movement during my doctoral studies in religious studies at McGill University (class of 2008). Newly returned to my Catholic faith and eager to meet like-minded people, I joined a campus pro-life group called "Choose Life," founded by an American student, Natalie Fohl. One of our first activities was watching a video by Stephanie Gray, a pro-life speaker, which included a stark portrayal of abortion. Seeing that video changed my life (click here to view this video).
Abortion was no longer a topic for polite debate; it was a horrific crime that I could not ignore. I couldn’t justify sipping coffee in a Montreal café, writing about Kant’s moral proof for the existence of God, while mere blocks away, innocent lives were being destroyed. I was, as they say, "redpilled."
I soon connected with Campagne Québec-Vie (Quebec Life Coalition), founded in 1989 by Gilles Grondin, a former Canadian diplomat, in response to the devastating Morgentaler Supreme Court decision of 1988 that decriminalized abortion. Leaving academia behind, I joined this mission full-time.
15 Years of Growth and Witness
My first major undertaking with CQV was organizing Montreal’s inaugural 40 Days for Life campaign, a prayer vigil outside the Morgentaler abortion facility on Saint Joseph Street.
Day 1 of the first 40 Days for Life in Montreal in February 2009. I’m on the left holding the sign (“Let us pray for Quebec to regain its will to live”)
That was just the beginning. Over the past 15 years, we have:
- Organized nearly 30 40 Days for Life campaigns and 15 LifeChains.
- Participated in 15 National Marches for Life in Ottawa and launched Quebec’s first March for Life earlier this year.
- Created "Pregnant, Worried?" (1-855-871-4442), a toll-free hotline and online support service for women in crisis pregnancies.
- Established a French-language pro-life news service that has reached hundreds of thousands.
- Established an English-language branch of the pro-life movement in Quebec, called Quebec Life Coalition
- Partnered with Théovox Studios to bring our pro-life message to Quebecers from all walks of life.
Through God’s grace, we’ve grown from two full-time staff members to five, despite government attempts to quash us, by discrediting the pro-life movement as "disinformation."
A Personal Reflection
When I began this journey, I was a 34-year-old "eternal student." Now, at 50, I am a husband and father of four.
My family and I celebrating my 50th birthday on December 8, 2024 near Quebec City, Qc.
My birthday, December 8, coincides with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This Catholic teaching shows us that Mary, like the Ark of the Covenant, was completely preserved from corruption, lined with gold within and without, to carry Christ within her. Living as a Christian means allowing God to work through us. We don’t do the good; He does. Our role is to follow His plan and avoid the pitfalls of self-reliance and pride.
I am thankful to God for guiding us and for the privilege of reminding Quebecers of their Christian roots and the true path to happiness. Abortion and euthanasia are paths of despair, not joy. Our mission is to proclaim this truth with love and courage.
A Call for Support
As you may know, the Canada Post strike continues. This is particularly concerning, as we typically receive 75% of our donations by mail. To those who have already given, thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you haven’t yet contributed, now is the time.
If you believe in our work and want to help us continue defending life and bringing Christ’s light to Quebec, please consider making an online donation or an Interac e-transfer. You can find the details here. Alternatively, you can call us toll-free at 1-855-996-2686 to make a donation.
A Celebration of Life
As I reflect on these 50 years, I am filled with gratitude for my wife, Natalia, our boys, and the incredible team and supporters like you who make this work possible. Together, we can continue to witness to the beauty of life and the hope of Christ in a culture that desperately needs both.
Thank you for your financial support and prayers.
God bless,
Georges Buscemi
President, Quebec Life Coalition
