In 1969, abortion was decriminalised in Canada and, that same year, Henry Morgentaler opened an abortion clinic in Montreal, marking the beginning of a barbaric and murderous era in Quebec. Since then, the number of abortions has risen significantly. According to available data, nearly a million abortions have been performed in Quebec over the years!
The 1970s
Following the legalisation of therapeutic abortion in 1969, the number of reported abortions in Canada began to rise. In 1974, around 12% of pregnancies in Canada ended in abortion, a proportion that had risen to 19% by 1992.
Between 1977 and 1980, there were 33,000 abortions. In those years, Quebec accounted for less than a quarter of all abortions in Canada. British Columbia had more and Ontario nearly four times as many... There may have been around 30,000 abortions in the 1970s (excluding 1980). There were relatively few abortions in Quebec in the early 1970s, thanks to the resistance of pro-life doctors who refused to set up abortion committees.
The 1980s
In 1980, the therapeutic abortion rate in Quebec was slightly higher than in 1979.
1990 to 2000
The 1990s saw a significant increase in the number of abortions in Canada. In 1992, the number of declared abortions in Canada was 102,085, an increase of 40.4% compared to 1988, which was the fateful year when abortion was completely decriminalised, thanks to the Morgentaler decision of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Given that the population of Quebec represents approximately 25% of the Canadian population, it can be estimated that approximately 25% of abortions in Canada were performed in Quebec. This would represent approximately 25,500 abortions in Quebec in 1992.
Years 2000 to 2025
According to the Institut de la statistique du Québec, the number of reported induced abortions in Quebec has fluctuated over the past two decades. For example, in 2000, there were around 30,000 abortions, while in 2010 the figure was around 27,000. More recent data indicate a downward trend, with around 22,000 abortions in 2019. These figures are available in the annual demographic report published by the Institut de la statistique du Québec. Source
The Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) also provides data on voluntary terminations of pregnancy. For example, in 2015, the RAMQ reported approximately 25,000 reimbursed abortions. This data is available in the RAMQ's annual reports. Source
Combining these sources, there has been a gradual decline in the number of abortions in Quebec since the early 2000s, from around 30,000 a year to just over 20,000 towards the end of the 2010s. This trend could be attributed to various factors, such as improved access to contraception and societal changes.
Total estimate
Combining these estimates, we obtain :
- 1970s: Approximately 30,000 abortions
- 1980s: Approximately 150,000 abortions
- 1990s: Approximately 250,000 abortions
- 2000 to 2025: Approximately 625,000 abortions
This gives a total estimate of around 1,055,000 abortions in Quebec since 1970.
