Désirée - An Update - Quebec Life Coalition

A certain stability has settled over Désirée’s life.

Last Christmas Eve, I received a call from a homeless pregnant woman. She asked for food.

Since that first contact with Désirée, who was 20 weeks pregnant at the time, she and I have stayed in touch through a home-cooked meal for her and her boyfriend, lunch at Tim Horton’s, and numerous phone calls.

Her journey over the past nine weeks has been rocky, as she has gone from being homeless, to sharing a room in a boarding house, to a shelter with twelve other women. She also struggles with drug addiction, which is not good for her or for the child she is carrying.

Recently, there was a ray of hope. She has been admitted to a residential detoxification program, and when this program ends, she will be admitted to another for a longer period of time. In these programs, she will be able to carry her pregnancy to term and beyond, for as long as the need is there.

A modicum of stability and security has come into her life. Warmth, three meals a day, and access to medical professionals, but, more importantly, a drug-free environment.

A private bedroom, regular meals, private facilities for personal hygiene, many of the amenities we take for granted are now available to Désirée.

On Saturday, March 8, we are having a potluck/fundraiser for Désirée and the other pregnant women who come to us. All are invited and the money and items collected will go to help those less fortunate.
