Many of you may not be aware that the Quebec Life Coalition operates a “pregnancy support service.”
The quotation marks are added to draw attention that we do more than helping young ladies who are experiencing hardship during their pregnancies. Yes, we do the latter but over the years this service has embraced to include mothers of newborns as well to support post-abortive women live with their irreversible decisions. Here are a few examples.
We met Danielle this past May 2024. She called us after having seen our internet notice asking whether we could purchase a bed for her. She had been sleeping on the floor in her apartment and as her pregnancy progressed, it was becoming ever more uncomfortable. So, on a Saturday afternoon, we met and walked over to a retailer not too far from her apartment. There, not only was a queen-size mattress purchase but also the box to go with it and the necessary bedding.
We continued to remain in contact. Subsequent talks have touched upon her struggles with the father of her child, an injustice she experienced with our health care system, and being introduced to her husband who works abroad. A second purchase was made in July—a pair of lounging chairs so that her social worker could sit down and not stand whenever she visited.
Caring for life from conception to natural death, the motto of the Quebec Life Coalition, also includes helping mothers with newborns. We accompanied Marise during her pregnancy and when she delivered in April 2024, our contact did not end there. Living in rural Quebec, she experiences loneliness and isolation since birthing. We networked with two local QLC supporters who have offered to visit her regularly and provide goods for her and her child thereby making life for this single mother, victim of an abusive spouse, better.
Finally, ending the injustice of abortion in our society also entails supporting post-abortive women deal with the tragedy they have been part of. At the Quebec Life Coalition, we are considering opening a retreat centre where women can go and heal, whether alone or as part of a Rachel’s Vineyard retreat.
