A telephone number that many would like to see shut down

There is a telephone number that many people would like to see shut down.

For more than a decade now, it rings between eighty and a hundred times a year. On the other end of the line, almost always a woman. Often alone. Sometimes without a roof over her head. Always facing a choice that society would like to make obvious to her: to kill the child she carries.

That number belongs to Enceinte et inquiète (Pregnant and Worried), the pregnancy-support service that Quebec Life Coalition founded more than ten years ago and has kept alive ever since.

Let me tell you about the past few weeks, without names, for discretion is part of our work.

We are five days from the end of our three-week early-summer fundraising campaign. Thank you for generously supporting our Enceinte et inquiète listening service. Give generously today.

At the end of May, a woman dialed our number to ask what resources were available to her. She wanted to carry her pregnancy to term. We placed her in the care of a support worker.

That same evening, after a public presentation of our work, another woman came forward to speak in private. She told of her abortion, and of the long path to healing she finally found by returning to her faith.

At the beginning of June, a case was brought to us: a woman in her thirties, several months pregnant and without a home. Her family could not take her in. She wanted, in spite of everything, to keep her child. We immediately set in motion a network of maternity residences, and our prayer partners carried this family.

And there is the young woman, newly settled in Quebec, without health insurance, whose coverage depends on a job she does not yet have. Referred to us by religious sisters, she called us back twice, three times. We put her in touch with a doctor we trust, who agreed to see her.

This is what your gifts make possible, week after week, for more than ten years: not only the accompaniment of pregnant women in difficulty, but also that of mothers of newborns, of mothers whose children have already grown, and of women seeking, after an abortion, to rise again. Thank you for giving generously today.

If I withhold the names, it is not only to protect these women. It is also to protect those who help them.

For here is a truth that few people suspect: most of the pro-life centres that accompany pregnant women in Quebec live in fear of the spotlight. One hostile news report, one question raised in the National Assembly, and their charitable status, or their funding, can collapse. So they move forward in a low voice.

At Quebec Life Coalition, we do not fear such reprisals. We bear our name in broad daylight. We accept being the target, the open face of the pro-life movement, so that these more discreet organizations can carry on their work in safety. We are, in short, their lightning rod.

This earns us a few unusual visits. In September 2021, a pro-abortion journalist presented herself at Enceinte et inquiète, posing as a pregnant woman in distress, in the hope of flushing out « the other face » of the pro-life movement and exposing the organizations we accompany. She left with an indignant article, but without our secrets. They are not so easily wrenched from us.

I am writing to you this morning because we are at a decisive moment.

Our early-summer fundraising campaign has a goal of $20,000. As I write to you, we are at 7,838 $. That leaves us $12,162 to raise, and only five days to do it.

It is a steep climb. Someone, or several, will have to make an extra effort. And experience has taught me this: it is often Enceinte et inquiète that tips the scales. When our donors truly understand what is at stake at the other end of that telephone line (1-855-871-4442), they respond.

Please give today >>

These $12,162 are not an abstraction. They are a bed for a woman sleeping on the floor. A night of shelter for a mother without a home. A doctor for the woman the system leaves without care. And, for Campagne Québec-Vie, the means to remain the name that can be spoken aloud, so that others may work in peace.

Help us raise the $12,162 we still need >>

No one else will take your place in this task. Please give generously, sacrificially, today.

For Life,

Georges Buscemi

p.s. We have only five days left and $12,162 to raise. Every gift, small or large, brings us closer to the goal, and keeps that telephone number in service for the next woman who dials it. Please give today >>
