The recent decision by the Superior Court upholding the legality of “buffer zones” around abortion clinics in Quebec is deeply disappointing, though not surprising. Sadly, it confirms a growing trend toward progressive illiberalism observable throughout Canada.
Alarming Proliferation of Buffer Zones in Canada
Initially limited to abortion facilities, these “buffer zones” are now spreading to other contexts: schools, daycares, places of worship, and various community sites (Toronto, Vaughan, Calgary, Ottawa). This expansion reflects a retreat of freedom of expression, indicating that authorities no longer consider this freedom as fundamental, but rather as conditional—perhaps even bothersome.
The Emblematic Case of Sean Feucht
Recent events involving Christian artist Sean Feucht clearly illustrate this trend. Several of his concerts in Canada, notably in Quebec City and Halifax, were canceled under the pretext of security concerns and “hateful” views—simply due to his pro-life stance, support for Trump, and criticism of LGBT ideology. This points to a climate of growing intolerance toward any public expression of Christian or conservative convictions.
A Climate of Growing Anti-Christian Intolerance
As highlighted in our Christian Persecution report and our recent open letter to U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, there is an increasing suppression of the rights of believing and pro-life citizens in Quebec and Canada. This includes restrictions on freedom of assembly, tolerated violence against peaceful demonstrators (such as during the Quebec March for Life last May), and persistent threats to the charitable status of churches and pro-life organizations.
Progressive Illiberalism: A New Ideological Regime
We are witnessing the rise of a “progressive illiberalism,” where dominant ideologies—radical environmentalism, abortion, euthanasia, and LGBT activism—have taken the place once occupied by traditional Christian values. In this context, abortion clinics have become sacred spaces, protected with near-religious fervor, which helps explain the extreme rigidity of laws such as “buffer zones.”
CQV’s Clear Position on Liberty and Liberalism
While CQV does not subscribe to classical liberalism, we recognize that it offers more space for Christians and pro-lifers than the current progressive illiberalism, often referred to as the “woke regime.” We firmly reject this new dominant ideology and will continue to defend principles rooted in a Christian vision of the common good.
The Human and Social Reality of Abortion
Let us not forget that abortion remains, fundamentally, the deliberate elimination of an unborn child, with grave consequences not only for the child but also for the mother and for society as a whole. A new report detailing these human, psychological, and social impacts will soon be published by CQV.
Future Decisions Regarding Legal Recourse
At this time, no final decision has been made regarding the possibility of an appeal. We are reviewing all legal and strategic options to continue our fight.
Moving Forward Regardless
In light of this troubling situation, it is worth remembering that societies which persist in deadly ideologies often decline and disappear. Our role is not to linger indefinitely with them, but rather to persistently call out to those with ears to hear, and to tirelessly pursue our mission in the service of life, truth, and authentic freedom.
